Ingredients

20 minutes
2 servings
  • 1 cupCooked toor daal (pigeon pea lentils)
  • 2 cupsWater
  • 1 tablespoonCooking oil/ ghee
  • 1 tspMustard seeds
  • 1 tspCumin seeds
  • 1/4 tspAsafoetida or hing
  • 5- 6Curry leaves
  • 1/2 tspTurmeric powder
  • 1 tspChilli powder
  • 1/2 tspGoda masala(Maharashtrian masala)
  • 2 tspJaggery powder
  • 1 tspTamarind pulp or Kokum fruit 2 pieces
  • 1 tspChopped ginger and garlic combined (optional)
  • as per taste Salt
  • as required Chopped coriander leaves to garnish

Steps

20 minutes
  1. 1

    First, mash the cooked lentils and add water. Make a smooth mixture without lumps by using a masher or back of ladle.

  2. 2

    Heat oil in a kadhai. Add mustard, cumin and let them pop up. Then add rest of the ingredients like ginger garlic chopped,, curry leaves hing, turmeric powder and Chilli powder, one by one and keep stirring on low flame.

  3. 3

    Then add the toor daal and mix well. Let it boil for 1 minute. Then add jaggery, tamarind or Kokum and salt to taste.

  4. 4

    Mix and boil for 2 to 3 minutes till aromatic. Lastly add the Maharashtrian goda masala and stir. Cover for 1 minute. Then garnish with chopped coriander leaves.

  5. 5

    Serve delicious Phodniche varan with rice or poli (chapati). Enjoy!
