Summer time is mango time. Mango reigns supreme in Tamil cuisine. Raw mango cooked with dal and spices-it is Mom’s recipe . I slighlly modified it. You need to use mangoes with tanginess, sour mangoes not sweet. If not tangi, you may add tomatoes to the recdipe.

Take toor with 2c water in a bowl. Cook in a pressure cooker until it is completely cooked. When toor is cooking attend to rest of the cooking
Over medium heat. In a heavy bottomed saucepan, heat oil Pop mustard seeds, stir in fennel, asafetida, methi, about 2 mins. Add urud, when gets golden brown, add green chili, ginger, turmeric powder and curry leaves, about3 mins. If mangoes are not sour add tomatoes, cook 4 mins. Add mango until it gets soft, about 4 mins. - 4
Add 3c water, bring it to boil. Stir in the cooked dal, masala powder; simmer heat; After 5 minutes, turn off the stove. Salt to taste. Garnish wuth chopped cilantro. Puli paruppu is ready to taste and share. Serve hot or at room temperature.

Serve healthy flavorful aromatic dal with rice, dosai, chappathi and etc.
