This is actually the same thing as Onion ‘Kakiage’ Tempura. ‘Kakiage’ is a type of Tempura made with a variety of thinly sliced or chopped Vegetables and Seafood. The most popular ingredient is probably Onion. I pan-fried the mixture instead of deep-frying it. This humble Onion Pancake is very tasty.

Ingredients

10 minutes
2 Servings
  • 1large Onion *thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoonOil
  • Batter
  • 1/4 cupPlain Flour
  • 1/4 cupPotato Starch
  • 1/4-1/2 teaspoonSalt
  • 1Egg
  • 2 tablespoonsWater *plus extra if required
  • *Note: You can use Water only if you don’t want to use Egg
  • Dipping Sauce
  • 2 tablespoons‘Ponzu’ to serve *OR 1 tablespoon Soy Sauce & 1 tablespon Rice Vinegar
    Ponzu
  • Crispy Chilli Oil OR Rāyu (Chilli Oil) to serve

Steps

10 minutes
  1. 1

    Mix the Batter ingredients in a mixing bowl. Alter the amount of Water to make THICK Batter.

    'Kakiage' Tempura
  2. 2

    Add thinly sliced Onion to the batter and mix well to combine.

  3. 3

    Heat Oil in a frying pan over medium low heat, form a large pancake OR 2 to 4 smaller pancakes, and cook until both sides are nicely browned and crispy.

    Cut into smaller pieces if large, and serve with ‘Ponzu’. I recommend to add some Crispy Chilli Oil OR Rāyu (Chilli Oil) to the sauce.

    *Note: Prawns can be a good addition to this Onion Pancake. The photo below is the same Onion Pancake cooked with 100g Prawns, cut into small pieces.
