Ingredients

  1. 4 cupsall-purpose flour (about 500 grams)
  2. 2/3 cupsugar (about 125 grams)
  3. 3 1/2 tablespoonsunsalted butter (about 50 grams)
  4. 3 1/2 tablespoonsvegetable shortening (about 50 grams)
  5. 3eggs
  6. 1/2 cupwarm milk (about 125 ml)
  7. 1 teaspoonvanilla extract (about 5 ml)
  8. 1 tablespoonactive dry yeast (about 15 grams)
  9. Sugar crust for the rosca:
  10. 1/2 cupvegetable shortening (about 100 grams)
  11. 2/3 cupall-purpose flour (about 100 grams)
  12. 1/2 cupsugar (about 100 grams)
  13. Decoration:
  14. Candied fruit strips (ate) in different flavors
  15. Halved cherries
  16. 1beaten egg for brushing

Steps

  1. 1

    Make a well in the flour and add the remaining ingredients in the center. Mix and knead to form a dough.

  2. 2

    Knead until the dough no longer sticks to your hands or the work surface. Place in a bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let rise until doubled in size.

  3. 3

    Shape the dough into a ring, brush with beaten egg, decorate as desired, and add the sugar crust. Bake at 350°F (180°C) for 25 to 35 minutes, or until golden brown.

    Let cool and sprinkle with a little powdered sugar.
