Folded Onigiri (Easier Than Onigirazu)

Is this even easier than the trendy 'onigirazu'? Just place nori, rice, and your favorite filling on plastic wrap, then fold it in half—no need to shape a triangle! Perfect for anyone who finds making traditional onigiri tricky.
Recipe background:
This is a handy trick for when you don’t have time to make lots of onigiri in the morning, like for sports day. Get creative with the fillings and arrange them colorfully in a bento box!

Steps
- 1
Place a sheet of plastic wrap on a cutting board. Put the nori (hand roll size) on top, add rice (press down the center where you’ll fold), and sprinkle with seasoned salt.
- 2
For those wondering about the amount of rice: I measured mine and it was about 2/3 cup (140 grams). Use this as a reference!
- 3
Place your favorite filling, like salmon flakes, in the center of the front half. Fold the back half over the front, wrapping with the plastic wrap.
- 4
Fold the front of the plastic wrap over and press gently from the top. Fold the left and right sides in as well.
- 5
Flip it over and press the center.
- 6
Cut in half with the plastic wrap still on.
- 7
All done! Place directly into your bento box. You can eat it without getting your hands messy!
- 8
Try different fillings like grilled beef or tuna mayo for a fun onigiri bento.
- 9
Try sautéed sausage with mayo and whole grain mustard, plus pea shoots.
- 10
Great for bento boxes!
- 11
Baby ham & seasoned egg.
- 12
Spam & rolled omelet.
- 13
Pork loin cutlet onigirazu.

If you’re having trouble sealing the edges: When placing rice on the nori in step 1, leave about 3/4 inch (2 cm) at the front edge without rice.
- 18
Fold the back half (with the filling) over the rice, wrapping with the plastic wrap until it meets the rice.
- 19
Peel back the top plastic wrap and fold the front edge of the nori over the rice.
- 20
(This helps keep the rice from spilling out the sides.)
- 21
Fold the left, right, and top sides of the plastic wrap to seal.
- 22
Cut in half and you’re done!
- 23
Try with kinpira gobo (sautéed burdock root and carrot).
