Horse gram is a low profile humble legume which got it's English name from it's use as a staple food for horse and cattle. This pulse crop is widely cultivated and consumed in India since ancient times and native to South East Asian sub continent and tropical Africa. In India horse gram is commonly known as Kulthi in Hindi, Kolu in Tamil, Ulavalu in Telugu.
Horse gram is one of the richest vegetarian source of protein. It is high in iron and calcium, in fact it has higest calcium content amongst pulses. It is low in lipid and sodium content and its slow digestible starch makes it ideal for diabetic and obesity patient.

Wash and soak horse gram for 6-8 hours or over night. Then grind it with green chillies, without water. Cover and keep it in a warm place for 4-5 hours for fermentation.

Then prepare a steamer with water and turn on the heat. Grease the plate or thali. Add salt in the batter and mix and whip it well for 2-3 minutes.

Pour batter in the greased thali and place it in the steamer, cover and cook for about 12-15 minutes.

Remove from the steamer, after 1-2 minutes cut them in your desired shape, sprinkle coriander and serve.
