Prepare the ingredients. Rinse the red beans and soak them for 5 hours or overnight. Place the soaked red beans in the inner pot of a rice cooker, add enough water to cover the beans, and add 2 cups of water to the outer pot. Cook until the red beans are tender.

Sweeten the red bean soup with dark brown sugar to taste.

Peel the yam and cut it into small cubes.

Place the yam cubes in a heatproof container and put it in the rice cooker. Add 1 cup of water to the outer pot and steam until the yam is cooked through.
