Japanese Hayashi Rice (Beef Stew over Rice)

naokoyyy
naokoyyy @cook_40117677

Hayashi Rice is a savory dish featuring thinly sliced beef, onions, and mushrooms simmered in a rich tomato-based sauce, served over rice. While it looks similar to Japanese curry, it isn't spicy at all since it uses no curry spices; instead, it highlights the deep umami of beef and the sweetness of onions.

Like omurice, this dish uniquely evolved in Japan by blending Western techniques with local tastes. Although store-bought roux cubes are popular, you can easily recreate a restaurant-quality version at home using everyday ingredients!
