To give this soup jar as a gift, layer the rice & peas with the other ingredients in a jar and tie these instructions onto it with a pretty bow:

Combine the contents of this jar with 1500 millilitres water (6 & 1/4 cups) and a 400g can (14 ounces) of chopped tomatoes in a pan and bring to the boil. Cover then reduce the heat and let simmer for an hour until the split peas are tender

Stir in 250g cooked, chopped or shredded chicken (9 ounces, or stay on the vegan wagon and use white beans) and cook over a low heat to warm it through, 5 or so minutes. Discard the bay leaf, season to taste with salt and pepper and enjoy
