Grandma's spaghetti sauce

My grandma use to make this sauce all the time and freeze the left over for quick easy meals during the week. Sometimes I get crazy and add black olives, green pepper, red pepper and sun dried tomatoes for a chunky sauce.
Grandma's spaghetti sauce
My grandma use to make this sauce all the time and freeze the left over for quick easy meals during the week. Sometimes I get crazy and add black olives, green pepper, red pepper and sun dried tomatoes for a chunky sauce.
Steps
- 1
Chop the tomatoes into chunks and put into a large pot or crock pot
- 2
Pour the tomato sauce in with the tomatoes and put on medium heat
- 3
While that's heating up, lightly brown the garlic and onion with some red pepper flakes in a frying pan with the olive oil.
- 4
Once they are soft and lightly browned add to the tomatoes
- 5
Add the Italian seasoning, basil, and salt to taste. Tip: because the Italian seasoning is dried you will need a lot. I use probably 2-4 tablespoons. If you use dried basil add extra.
- 6
Stir and cover. Let simmer on LOW heat for 2-3 hours. Or until the sauce is bubbly and the tomatoes are soft
- 7
Take the cover off and turn the heat up to medium low heat. Let simmer until the sauce thickens to your preference.
- 8
Add to spaghetti pasta, homemade lasagna, goolash or whatever you want! I like to add Italian sausage and use it in lasagna
