Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoonolive oil
  • 1 cupchopped onion
  • 4 clovesgarlic, minced
  • 1/2 (1 cup)red wine
  • 1 tablespoonwhite sugar
  • 1 tablespoonchopped fresh basil
  • 1 teaspooncrushed red pepper flakes-or more to taste
  • 2 tablespoonstomato paste
  • 1 tablespoonlemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoonItalian seasoning
  • 1/4 teaspoonground black pepper-or to taste
  • To 15 ounce cans peeled and diced Italian tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoonschopped fresh parsley

Steps

  1. 1

    Heat the oil in a large pan or saucepan over medium heat. Saute the onion for about 3 minutes, then add the garlic and sauté for a further 2 minutes

  2. 2

    Stir in the wine, sugar, basil, red pepper, tomato paste, lemon juice, Italian seasoning, black pepper and tomato; bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium, then simmer uncovered for about 15 minutes

  3. 3

    Stir in the parsley.
