Collard Greens are the perfect Southern inspired side dish and so full of flavor packed with hints of onions, garlic and applewood smoked bacon notes or delicious ham. This dish will be a hit!

Ingredients

  1. 1 lbFresh or canned collard greens
  2. 4 slicesbacon or 8 slices of black forest ham
  3. 2 tbspoil
  4. 1medium yellow onion (chopped)
  5. 4garlic cloves (minced)
  6. 1-2 cupschicken broth or 2 tbsp chicken soup base
  7. 1 1/2 tspbrown sugar
  8. Pinchsalt (optional)
  9. to taste Black pepper
  10. 1 tspbutter
  11. 1large jalapeno sliced
  12. 2-3 tbspwhite vinegar

Cooking Instructions

  1. 1

    Cook the bacon or ham on medium heat until it begins to crisp up. Once it does, remove it from the skillet and chop into bite-sized pieces.

    Add olive oil and onion, fry it for 5-7 minutes, stirring frequently until softened. Afterwards add the garlic and jalapeno and cook an additional 30 seconds before adding in the collard greens.

    After you stir the greens together with the onions and garlic, add in the chicken broth or soup base, brown sugar, salt, pepper and white vinegar and stir well, reduce heat to low and simmer for 90 minutes until the collard greens are tender.
