Ingredients

40-60 minutes
4 people
  1. 1 cupToor Daal (lentils)
  2. 1 bunchGreen Spinach
  3. 1Onion finely chopped
  4. 1- 2 Tomato finely chopped (add 2 if you need tangier)
  5. 1 tsp Turmeric Powder
  6. 1.5 tbspChilli Powder
  7. 1.5 tbsp Cumin seeds
  8. 6-7 Garlic cloves chopped
  9. 2 tbsp Ginger garlic paste
  10. as per tasteSalt
  11. 2-3 tbspnOil
  12. For Masala
  13. 2-3 Cloves
  14. 2-3Green cardamom
  15. 1Star Anise
  16. 1/2 strandMace
  17. 1 tbspCumin seeds
  18. 1 tsp Fennel seeds
  19. 1 inchCinnamon stick
  20. as requiredDry roast the above ingredients
  21. as required Grind to a fine powder

Steps

40-60 minutes
  1. 1

    Soak daal for 15-20 minutes, and then cook it in a cooker.(3-4 whistles)

  2. 2

    Wash the green spinach clean and chop them finely.

  3. 3

    Heat oil in a wok/kadai. Add cumin seeds, and let it splutter.

  4. 4

    Add chopped garlic and as the aroma emanates, add chopped onions to it.

  5. 5

    Add ginger garlic paste to onions once the onions are translucent.

  6. 6

    Add chopped tomatoes after the raw smell of ginger garlic paste is gone.

  7. 7

    Cook till the tomatoes are mushy. Now, add the chopped spinach and cook for 2-3 minutes.

  8. 8

    Add turmeric powder and chilli powder. Add some salt. Mix well and cook for another 2 minutes.

  9. 9

    Now, add the boiled daal to this. Add the ground masala powder to it. Cook till the mixture boils. add some more salt if needed.
    Dal Paalak is ready.
