A popular traditional Maharashtrian dish is Masavadi Rassa. In some Maharashtrian families near Pune, this dish is considered a special menu item when it comes to making vegetarian dishes. Which looks like a non-vegetarian dish but is completely vegetarian. As its shape looks like a fish, it is called Masavadi. Cooked gram flour which is loaded with lots of spices. It is usually served with hot spicy red curry (rassa). Which goes very well with jowar or bajri bhakhri.

Cooking Instructions

To make stuffing, roast sesame seeds, poppy seeds, crushed coconut, peanuts in a pan. Add 1 tbsp of oil and roast the chopped onions and garlic till they turn brown. Then add sesame seeds, poppy seeds, coconut, peanuts, garlic and crush them, then add red chilli powder, Kanda lahsoon masala, salt and coriander and mix well.

To make maswadi, heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds, asafoetida, turmeric, green chillies, ginger, garlic paste, saute, add water and let it boil. Then add gram flour and mix and cover the lid and let it cook for 5 minutes.

Then wet a clean Rumal and sprinkle coriander and crushed coconut on it and place boiled gram flour on it. Roll the prepared stuffing stone by pressing the rumal on both sides and cut it into equal pieces.

To make the gravy, heat oil in a pan and roast onion, coriander, ginger, garlic until golden. After it cools, add coriander, salt, turmeric, red chilli powder, garam masala and coriander powder to it and make a paste in a mixer. Heat oil in a pan, add 1.5 glasses of hot water and let it boil on low heat for 15 minutes.

So, Maswadi rassa is ready to serve. Serve with warm Juwar bhakhri or chapati.
