Poor Boys Sausage Gravy

This gravy is made without using milk. I have tried to keep it as simple as possible. It is a decent gravy for when you are out of milk. If you are out of margarine or butter, you can just add another heaping Tbsp of shortening. The margarine seems to give it a little better flavor though. I use all purpose flour for mine, but you can use self rising also. More or less pepper can be added to suit your taste. This makes a good serving for one hungry person. If more is wanted, just double the ingredients.

Steps

20 mins
  1. 1

On medium heat melt the shortening and margarine.

  2. 2

Thaw and crumble in 2 sausage patties.

  3. 3

    Cook until sausage is browned.

  4. 4

SLOWLY add in 1/4 cup of flour (level), about 2 tsp at a time, whisking constantly. (Do not add any more flour than this.)

  5. 5

Once all flour is added, continue to whisk for about 5 minutes until gravy has darkened. (This helps cook the flour taste out.)

  6. 6

SLOWLY whisk in 1 1/2 cups of water about 1/4 cup at a time.

  7. 7

Turn heat to medium low and whisk in 1 tsp of black pepper. (More or less to taste. Usually I just sprinkle over gravy until covered nicely.)

  8. 8

Whisk well, then let sit for 10 minutes to simmer.

  9. 9

After 10 minutes simmering whisk together well again and serve.

When the place I worked closed, I decided to make some cut backs. I had never really cooked before. Most of my meals had been either frozen or canned, heated in the microwave. I also ate out several times a week.Having a little money saved and being close to retirement age, I decided to semi retire and start living more frugally. I quickly learned that dried beans, pasta, rice, potatoes, flour, and a lot of really good foods are so much cheaper and better than their canned and frozen counterparts.Being single, I rarely buy milk, because it goes bad before I can drink it. I do buy eggs, but rarely find a need for them in my recipes. I want to keep my recipes as simple and basic as possible. I am sure there are plenty of 20 ingredient recipes that most likely taste better than mine. My goal is to keep things simple, inexpensive and yummy. My recipes often evolve when I stumble upon an improvement or tweak to the old recipe. I will update my recipes anytime I improve them. If you find an improvement let me know. Maybe I will decide to use it. As I discover new recipes I will add them here. I hope I can help others to be able to make good food on a tight budget with my easy and basic recipes. Thanks for your interest in my recipes! I wish you the best in all you do!
