Steps
- 1
Chop the tomato, garlic, and dry red chilies separately. You can use a chopper or chop them by hand. Set aside a small portion of chopped coriander leaves for garnishing.
- 2
Soak half of a medium-sized lemon of tamarind in warm water and extract a thick tamarind juice. Set it aside.
- 3
Heat 1-2 teaspoons of oil in a pan.
- Add a small pinch of mustard seeds and let them splutter.
- Add a small pinch of cumin seeds and sauté them separately to experience different aromas.
- Add dry red chilies and curry leaves. Let them splutter.
- Add the chopped tomato and garlic. Sauté for a few minutes until the tomatoes soften. - 4
While sautéing, add a small pinch of turmeric powder and mix.
Add salt to taste and continue sautéing for about 2 minutes. - 5
When the tomatoes are soft, add the tamarind extract in a thick consistency.
Mix the tamarind extract well with the mixture. - 6
Let the mixture simmer until the raw smell of tamarind disappears.
- 7
Once the raw smell is gone, add 1/2 tsp of cumin powder, 3/4 to 1 tsp of black pepper powder, and a pinch of asafoetida. Stir well. Be careful not to let the rasam boil after adding these spices, as it may affect the taste.
- 8
Finally, add the remaining chopped coriander leaves.
Reduce the flame to low. When the rasam begins to simmer from the sides, turn off the heat. - 9
Garnish with a few fresh coriander leaves.
- 10
Serve your delicious Thakkali Milagu Rasam hot with steamed rice. It can also be served as a comforting soup.
