Ingredients

  1. 1 cupKolam Rice
  2. 1/2 cupRed Lentils
  3. 1Onion (Regular) (Finely Chopped)
  4. 4Green Chillies (Finely Chopped)
  5. 1Tomato (Finely Chopped)
  6. 1 tspGinger Paste
  7. 1 tspGarlic Paste
  8. 1 tbspCoriander Leaves (Finely Chopped)
  9. 1 SprigCurry Leaves
  10. 1/4 tspCumin Seeds
  11. as neededFew Peppercorns
  12. 2Cardamoms
  13. 1 inch Cinnamon Stick
  14. 2Cloves
  15. pinchAsafoetida
  16. 1Veg Soup Cube
  17. 1/4 tspTurmeric Powder
  18. 1/2 tspPepper Powder
  19. 1/2 tspCumin Powder
  20. 1 tspGaram Masala
  21. to tasteSalt
  22. as neededGhee/Oil (For Cooking-As required)
  23. 3 cupsHot Water

Steps

  1. 1

    Heat ghee/oil in a small kadai. Add cumin seeds, cardamoms, cinnamon, cloves, peppercorns and asafoetida.

  2. 2

    Add green chillies and curry leaves and saute for few seconds. Add onions and saute till they are translucent.

  3. 3

    Add ginger paste and garlic paste and saute till the raw smell leaves.

  4. 4

    Add tomatoes and salt and cook till they become soft and mushy.

  5. 5

    Add turmeric powder, pepper powder, cumin powder and garam masala and saute for sometime.

  6. 6

    Add this in a rice steamer with rice, red lentils and water and let it cook till done. ie. For about 12 to 15 minutes. Serve hot with Pickle, Salad, Raita etc.
