Ingredients

10-15 minutes
2-3 servings
  1. 1/2 cupmasur/red lentils split/whole
  2. 1/2 tsppanch phoron spices mix or simply Nigella seeds
  3. 1 pinchcarom seeds
  4. 2dry red chilies
  5. 1bay leaf
  6. 1/2green chilli chopped
  7. 1/4 tspred chilli powder optional
  8. 1/4turmeric powder
  9. As neededsalt
  10. 2 tspmustard oil preferably or oil
  11. 1/4 cupfinely chopped onion optional

Cooking Instructions

    First cook dal with water, salt and turmeric powder till 1-2 whistles in a pressure cooker. Open the lid and mash/whisk the dal.

    Now prepare tempering. Heat the oil in a pan, add panch phoron or Nigella seeds, carom seeds, bay leaf. As it crackles add dry red chilies, red chilli powder (saute onions if your are adding, till it becomes light brown) and immediately pour it over the cooked dal.

    It's ready. Serve with aloo bhaja and steamed rice etc.
