Ingredients

  1. 3 cupAll-purpose flour (pre sifted)
  2. 3 tspBaking powder
  3. 3/4 cupButtermilk
  4. 1 tspSalt
  5. 3/4 tspBaking soda
  6. 3/4 cupShortning

Cooking Instructions

    Preheat oven to 450°F

    In a large bowl mix together flour, baking powder, salt, and baking soda.

    Add shortening slowly working it into the dry ingredients. (preferred hands)

  4. 4

    Add Buttermilk working it into the mixture.

  5. 5

    After everything is thoroughly mixed plop into a floured surface.

    Knees dough until it is about the consistency of clay. You can make it thicker by sprinkling more flour.

    Pinch off a church & roll it into a ball & then pat it flat about 1 1/2 in.-2 in. thick.

    if you want perfect looking biscuits,use a rolling pin & a cookie cutter 2 in. in diameter to make biscuits look better.

    cut out biscuits & place on a lightly greased/floured baking sheet about 1/4in. apart.

    place in center of rack & bake until golden brown about 14-18 min.

First time I ever made 'biscuits' (we don't usually have them in the UK) Had no buttermilk so used sour cream. Worked very well, really fluffy! Although I did have to use twice as much liquid than the amount stated, also used Suet and grated butter instead of shortening - Will definitely try these again! :positive
