Ingredients

  1. 8 ozlarge elbow macaroni noodles
  2. 2 cupsgrated sharp cheddar cheese (1/2 lb)
  3. 1/4 cupbutter
  4. 1/4 cupflour
  5. 2 cupsmilk
  6. 1 teaspoonsalt
  7. 1/8 teaspoonpepper

    Preheat oven to 375F

    Cook macaroni as package label directs; drain.

    In 1 1/2 quart shallow baking dish, alternate macaroni (in 2 layers) with 1 1/2 cups cheese (in 2 layers); set aside.

    Meanwhile, prepare sauce: Melt butter in medium saucepan; remove from heat. Blend in flour; gradually stir in milk, then salt and pepper. Bring to boiling, stirring; boil 1 minute.

    Pour sauce over macaroni and cheese in casserole dish. Top with remaining cheese.

    Bake 15 to 20 minutes, or until cheese is melted and browned.
