Kothavarangai Paruppu Usili| Cluster-Beans Steamed mixed Lentil

#traditional
Kothavarangai Paruppu Usili is a traditional South Indian dish which is a combination of ground and steamed mixed lentils combined with finely chopped Kothavarangai/Gawar Phali or Cluster beans.
It is a must to prepare Paruppu Usili during poojas and functions like weddings along with the entire South Indian meal.
It can e made with many other veggies like French beans, banana flowers, moringa leaves etc. Or simply as it is with only mixed dals.
This is a dish that my family loves to have on Sundays when they can enjoy it the whole day, not only as a part of meal, but also like a snack.

Steps
- 1
Wash and soak all three dals in a bowl for 2 hours, or in hot water for 1&1/2 hours.
- 2
Clean and wash beans. Finely chop them. Add to a bowl with water and pinch of turmeric and keep in a pressure cooker, with little water in the base. Steam cook till 2 whistles
- 3
After soaking the dals, remove all the water and grind them dry, coarsely with hing, turmeric, chillies and salt.
- 4
Remove in a bowl that fits in a pressure cooker or in a cooker container. Steam cook until 1 whistle.
- 5
Now lets prepare the Usili. Add oil a non stick pan and add mustard seeds, let splutter, add curry leaves and fry.
- 6
Now add the steamed dal by breaking it with the spatula. Mix well and let cook in the oil for 3-5 minutes.
- 7
Add the vegetable and mix well. Cover and let the flavours mix for sometime. This will take another 3-5 minutes.
- 8
Once the dal looks tender and doesn't stick with each other, it means the dish is ready.
- 9
Serve hot with steamed rice and vatha kuzhambu.
