Spam Musubi

The Spam musubi I had when I went to Hawaii on vacation were delicious, so I bought a ton of Spam! I tried to replicate the flavor of the Spam musubi I had in Hawaii at home.

Fat will come out of the Spam when you pan fry it, so don't use additional oil. I cut the Spam into 6 pieces this time. The Spam was sliced a bit thinner in Hawaii, so if you cut it into 8 slices it should be closer to the original. Recipe by Wathirokoro

Steps

  1. 1

Take the Spam out of the can and cut into 6 to 8 slices.

  2. 2

Lay the Spam slices in a heated frying pan, and fry until browned. (You don't need to use any oil in the pan since the Spam renders oil).

  3. 3

Add the sake, mirin and soy sauce to make a teriyaki sauce and coat the Spam with it.

Cut the nori seaweed into strips.

  5. 5

Make rice balls (musubi) that are the same size as the Spam. (I used about 1/2 a bowl of rice per slice.)

  6. 6

I lined the Spam can with plastic wrap and packed rice into it to make the musubi. It was easy to make them just the right size.
