There's a variation of the Croque Monsieur in Canada called a Monte Cristo. I tried making it.

A croque monsieur is topped with bechamel sauce but this isn't, so it's easy.
It's best to cut these before dipping in the egg mixture.
I used turkey ham, but you can use the ham or bacon of your choice. Recipe by Chirotantan

Ingredients

1 serving
  1. 2 sliceSliced bread
  2. 1several slices Ham of your choice
  3. 1Melting cheese (I used cheddar)
  4. 1 dashDried basil
  5. 1 dashSalt and pepper
  6. For the egg mixture:
  7. 1Beaten egg
  8. 3 tbspMilk
  9. 1 dashSalt
  10. 1 dashBlack pepper

Cooking Instructions

  1. 1

    Put as much ham and cheese on one of the bread slices as you like, sprinkle with salt, pepper and basil, and top with the other slice. The photo shows 2 servings.

    Make the egg mixture. Cut the sandwich into easy to eat pieces, and dip each piece into the egg mixture.

  3. 3

    Pan fry the sandwiches in a frying pan over medium heat until golden brown on both sides.

  4. 4

    Garnish and serve.
