Saru or tomato and dal rasam is a recipe from Karnataka. Saru is utilised as an appetizer before meal or with steamed rice or after the meal to help in digestion. It's very popular and I love this after knowing about it during my time working in Karnataka.
Steps

Boil the dal with salt, turmeric and bay leaf.

Heat oil in kadhai. Add cumin and mustard seeds and wait till they splutter.

Add onion, garlic, green chillies, curry leaves and saute till onions done. Mix tomato puree.

Cook till the puree thickes. Add the black pepper powder. Mix well.
- 5
Add the boiled dal and adjust water. Give a good mix and bring to boil.
Serve hot and enjoy.
