Tonkatsu, the Japanese dish of Panko-crumbed and deep-fried Pork Cutlet, is very popular. This is the almost same thing, but it is made of Pork Mince. You can use just Pork Mince, but I always add finely chopped Onion and other ingredients. When my children were young, I added other Vegetables as well. It was a good trick to make my son eat Vegetables.

Ingredients

4 servings
  • 500 gPork Mince *Beef Mince can be used
  • 1Onion *finely chopped, you can add other Vegetables as well
  • 1 cloveGarlic *grated
  • 1/2 cup‘Panko’ Breadcrumbs
  • 1Egg
  • 3/4 teaspoonSalt
  • 1/2 teaspoonGround Black Pepper
  • 2 tablespoonsPlain Flour
  • 1Egg *for coating
  • ‘Panko’ Breadcrumbs as required
  • Oil for frying
  • ‘Tonkatsu’ Sauce *store-bought ‘Tonkatsu’ Sauce is delicious, but you can make your own. Try my recipe below
  • Mock ‘Tonkatsu’ Sauce
  • 1/4 cupTomato Ketchup
  • 2 tablespoonsWorcestershire (Lea & Perrins)
  • 1& 1/2 tablespoons Soy Sauce
  • 2-3 teaspoonsSugar

Steps

  1. 1

    Combine Pork Mince, finely chopped Onion, ‘Panko’ Breadcrumbs and Egg. Season with Salt & Pepper and form into 8 patties.

  2. 2

    Coat the patties with Plain Flour very well, then coat with whisked Egg, and finally coat with ‘Panko’ Breadcrumbs.

  3. 3

    Heat Oil to 160 to 170℃ and fry until cooked through and golden, place on a rack and drain the Oil.

  4. 4

    Enjoy with ‘Tonkatsu’ Sauce. To make Mock ‘Tonkatsu’ Sauce, combine all ingredients. You can add a small amount of Lemon Juice, Chutney, Mustard or grated Ginger for extra flavour.
