Cooking Instructions
- 1
First, gather all the ingredients to make Mawa Gulab Jamun. Grate the mawa well. Sift the all-purpose flour and 1/8 tablespoon baking soda or 1/2 tablespoon baking powder, and add them. Mix all the ingredients well by kneading. I used baking powder here. Gradually add milk to make a smooth, soft dough for Gulab Jamun. Cover and set aside for a while.
- 2
Meanwhile, prepare the syrup. For that, add 300 grams of sugar, 5 to 6 cardamom powder, and some saffron strands to a pan. Add 2 cups of water and let it boil on high heat. Once it boils, let the syrup cook on medium heat, stirring occasionally, until it becomes sticky. Turn off the heat; the syrup is ready. When the Gulab Jamuns are fried, reheat the syrup.
- 3
Now, knead the dough well with your hands and cut it into portions. Smooth the dough and shape it into small round balls for Gulab Jamun. Ensure there are no cracks in the balls, as they may burst while frying.
- 4
Heat ghee or cooking oil in a pan on medium heat. Remember not to heat the ghee or oil on high heat, as this will cook the Gulab Jamuns to a golden brown on the outside but leave them raw inside. To check the right temperature, drop a small piece of dough in the oil. If it turns light golden and rises to the surface, the oil or ghee is at the right temperature for frying Gulab Jamun.
- 5
Now, add 8 to 10 Gulab Jamun balls one by one into the moderately hot ghee.
- 6
Fry on low heat until golden brown. Fry all the Gulab Jamuns in the same way until they are nicely golden and cooked.
- 7
The fried Gulab Jamuns are ready. Place them on a napkin to remove excess oil or ghee. Let them cool on the side. You will notice that they have doubled in size.
- 8
Now, reheat the prepared syrup and immerse all the Gulab Jamuns in it one by one. Let them soak for 1 to 2 hours. After 2 hours, you will see that all the Gulab Jamuns have absorbed the syrup and doubled in size.
- 9
Now, serve the soaked Gulab Jamuns on a plate and garnish with sliced almonds and pistachios.
- 10
Your soft and juicy Gulab Jamuns are ready. They taste very tender and delicious.
- 11
Make this sweet dish for any festival or occasion. Offer it to God and win the hearts of all your guests on the auspicious occasion of Diwali.

Gulab Jamun Gulab Jamun
Diwali is just a few days away and I jumped onto this opportunity to kickstart my Indian cuisine endeavour. Just like the fall of 2018, I wanna showcase a cuisine which few people know of. You might be wondering why am I saying that only a few people know of Indian cuisine; there are thousands upon thousands of Indian dishes recipes online. Am I delusional? The word curry is what the English use to name any sauces or gravies they found in India during their colonization. There are thousands upon thousands of different "curries" in India. You cannot find the same food in every mile of the Indian streets; every dish has many different variations and each has it's own unique taste. It is really that complex. Tikka Masala was not even founded in India, it is invented by the English. Naan is from Persia. Even tea was introduced by the English, Indians' main cup of beverages are milk or spiced water. Indian cuisine has suffered a huge misconception. When you are googling about Indian cuisine, your results will be curries, tikka masala and naan! But authentic Indian dishes are more than just that.Enuff of my ranting, anyway, I really hope you will give this recipe a try. Here I wish all Hindus a very Happy Diwali. Daniel Lim -
