I recently got on the refried beans wagon and there’s no dropping off of this one.
Steps

On medium heat, heat up oil in a pot. Turn heat to low and sauté garlic until fragrant. Add onions and sauté until tender and translucent

Stir in the beans and add stock. Turn heat to medium and let simmer. Once simmering, stir in the spices and cook for 5 - 10 minutes

Use a potato masher to mash the beans to a desired consistency. You mash them up to a purée or with a few chunky bits. Mix thoroughly

Cook down a little more until thickened. Feel free to add more stock if too dried

Serve and garnish with celery. I served mine mixed with rice
