Grilled Scallion-Stuffed Fried Tofu Skewers

Healthy, easy to make, and so tasty—you’ll want to keep eating them! They’re also budget-friendly. Great as a snack or for lunchboxes.
Recipe background:
I was craving yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) one day, but all I had in the fridge was fried tofu. So I made this yakitori-inspired dish instead! (Haha) Since I live in the countryside, I always have scallions on hand.

Recipe background:
I was craving yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) one day, but all I had in the fridge was fried tofu. So I made this yakitori-inspired dish instead! (Haha) Since I live in the countryside, I always have scallions on hand.
Steps
- 1
Drain excess oil from the fried tofu. Lay each sheet flat and cut in half horizontally. Open up each piece by slicing along the edge to make a single flat sheet.
- 2
Cut each piece of tofu in half lengthwise.
- 3
Cut the scallion into pieces the same length as the width of the tofu. Roll the scallion pieces up in the tofu strips. You can roll them with either side facing out, as you like.
- 4
This is what they look like rolled up.
- 5
Secure each roll with a toothpick to hold it together. Now they’re ready to cook.
- 6
Heat a skillet (no oil needed) and grill the rolls on both sides over medium heat until lightly browned. Make sure to cook the scallions through.
- 7
Mix the mentsuyu and sukiyaki sauce together.
- 8
Pour the sauce mixture into the edge of the skillet and quickly coat the rolls, being careful not to burn the sauce.
- 9
Press the rolls into any sauce left in the pan to give them a delicious, savory glaze.
- 10
They’re done and look delicious!
