Ingredients

  • 3 pieceschikuwa (Japanese fish cake sticks)
  • 1 stickcheese (such as mozzarella string cheese)
  • 1 teaspoontapioca starch (about 3 grams)
  • 1 tablespoonpanko breadcrumbs (about 7 grams)
  • 1egg

Steps

  1. 1

    Tear the cheese into strips and stuff them inside the chikuwa.

    Cut each chikuwa into 3 equal pieces and insert a skewer into each piece. Lightly coat with tapioca starch and refrigerate for 1 hour.

  3. 3

    Dip each piece in beaten egg, then coat thoroughly with panko breadcrumbs.

    Fry in oil at 340°F (170°C) until golden brown.
