This preparation, along with fish curry, was the staple food of an average Malayalee 3-4 decades back, especially in rural areas. Now it is restricted to hotels, thattu kadas  and 5 star hotels. Tapioca is being  cultivated still in some areas in Kerala.

I am a retired hand. Interested in cooking. I experiment with kerala cuisines only with my own modifications. I have observed that most of the recipes use lot of oil which is unhealthy. I request you to spread word among the cooking enthusiasts thru cucumbertown to reduce the quantum of oil for cooking and build a healthy family. Even if we reduce oil, there wont be much difference in taste. If we use ceramic coated frying pans we need very little oil for frying and making thoran curries. Myself and wife keep travelling most of the time.
