Hoja santa (Piper auritum) is an aromatic herb with a large, heart-shaped, velvety leaf which grows in the tropics of Latin America. Hoja santa is a member of the pepper family. It contains some of the same aromatic oils found in sassafras, hence the root beer smell.

Pharmaceutical Society has recognized it as being a stimulant, painkiller, and antispasmodic.
