Cream Pie (Variety of Flavors)

The base recipe is for Vanilla Cream Pie, but it can be altered for a variety of flavors including Banana, Butterscotch, Chocolate, and Lemon.

This was my grandma's recipe and she always called them Cream Pies. I rather tend to think of them as Pudding Pies. Yummy :)

Steps

  1. 1

Thaw pie shell and bake according to box directions.

  2. 2

Combine milk, sugar, cornstarch, and salt in a medium microwaveable bowl and mix well. Some ingredients may not blend well until during/after heating.

  3. 3

Microwave for 5 minutes or until mixture almost boils over. Be careful if using a bowl that gets hot. Also, don't walk away from it or, rest assured, you'll be cleaning the microwave too :)

  4. 4

Stir gently to blend ingredients (some tend to separate). Microwave for another 5 minutes Again...don't walk away from it.

  5. 5

Add margarine and vanilla (to taste) and stir gently to blend (agitating too much after thickening may cause it not to set as well).

  6. 6

Pour into pie shell. Let pie rest until it is room temperature. Place in the refrigerator until filling has set.

  7. 7

Top with Cool Whip and serve.

  8. 8

Banana Variation: Use 1/4 c. granulated sugar and 1/4 c. brown sugar instead of the sugar amount indicated in the base recipe. Slice banana(s) and line the baked pie shell with them, pouring pie filling on top.

  9. 9

Butterscotch Variation: Use 1/2 c. granulated sugar and 1/2 c. brown sugar instead of the sugar amount indicated in the base recipe.

  10. 10

Chocolate Variation: Use 2/3 c. granulated sugar and 3 tablespoons cocoa powder instead of the sugar amount indicated in the base recipe.

  11. 11

Lemon Variation: Use juice from 1/2 of a lemon and 1 c. granulated sugar, instead of the sugar amount indicated in the base recipe.
