Everyone who likes sweet and sour chicken should have their own recipe to make at home, and I mean "making the sauce yourself" level of at-home cooking. Because that bottled sweet and sour sauce? No thank you! I prefer to control the amounts of certain ingredients going into my dishes (like sugar and sodium).

In actuality, a lot of your favorite "Chinese dishes" (you know, what you pile on your plate at the buffet or call to have delivered at 11pm lol) are a LOT simpler to make at home than you may realize.
This is my version of the standard favorite.

  2. 1/2 cupcornstarch
  3. 2large eggs - beaten
  4. 2 tbsvegetable oil
  5. 1 (20 oz)can pineapple tidbit in juice - drained, juices reserved
  6. 1/2 cuplow sodium chicken broth
  7. 1/2 cupapple cider vinegar
  8. 1/2 cupbrown sugar - packed
  9. 1/4 cupall natural ketchup
  10. 2 tbslow sodium soy sauce
  11. 2 tbscornstarch
  12. 1/4 tspcrushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  13. to tastesalt and pepper
  14. ~Optional veggies
  15. 1medium yellow onion - chopped to 1/2" pieces
  16. 1medium green bell pepper - chopped to 1/2" pieces
  17. 1medium red bell pepper - chopped to 1/2" pieces
  18. 2green onions/scallions sliced on the bias for garnish

Cooking Instructions

  1. 1

Begin heating a large skillet over medium heat. Place 1/2 cup cornstarch in a large bowl. Beat eggs in a separate large bowl. Place bowls side by side close to stove.

  2. 2

When skillet is hot add oil. Season all the chicken pieces with salt and pepper. Place all in cornstarch and toss to coat. Transfer pieces to egg, shaking off excess cornstarch, and toss to coat again (I think using your hands works best for this step, clean of course).

  3. 3

Arrange half of the pieces in skillet (to prevent crowding and sticking together). Cook until golden brown on all sides and cooked through. About 7 minutes. Transfer to a paper towel lined plate. Repeat with remaining chicken.

  4. 4

If adding veggies place in skillet after chicken is removed. Cook until they begin to soften, about 5 minutes, stirring often. (My husband prefers without, so I leave out the peppers, but I won't budge on the onion. Lol.)

  5. 5

While chicken or veggies cook, wisk together reserved pineapple juice, chicken broth, vinegar, brown sugar, ketchup, soy sauce, and 2 tbs cornstarch (and red pepper flakes if using).

  6. 6

Add sauce to skillet. Bring to a simmer and cook until thickened, stirring often. Add chicken and pineapple tidbits to sauce. Stir to coat. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook until warmed through.

  7. 7

Serve over rice, garnish with green onion/scallions if desired. Enjoy!

Cooking is a hobby and a passion of mine. I love cooking and trying new and different things. The best thing about cooking? I get to prepare delicious food for my family and friends that they (almost) always love! Lol.Many of my recipes are experiments in what I could make with what was available at the time. Many are simply my version of classic and/or popular dishes. A few are variations of recipes I have found elsewhere online but adjusted to our tastes. No matter what, though, each of my recipes is tried and tested before posting and I hope you find as much joy in preparing them as I do.
