Ingredients

  • 2 cupsShredded cabbage -
  • ½Onion chopped medium sized onion
  • -¼ tspoonMustard seed
  • -½ cupGrated coconut
  • 1 pinchTurmeric powder
  • ¼ tspoonUzhunnu balls/urad dal -
  • -3Red chilli
  • 1 sprigCurry leaves -
  • to tasteSalt -
  • ½ tspoonChopped green chilli -
  • -2 pieceGarlic chopped
  • 1 pinchCumin seed
  • 1 pinchRed chilli powder

Steps

  1. 1

    Crush the grated coconut with turmeric powder, a pinch of chilli powder, garlic and cumin seeds. Keep aside

  2. 2

    In a pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds. Add the urad dal and roast.

  3. 3

    To it add the red chilli and the curry leaves.

  4. 4

    Add the chopped onion and green chilli and saute well. Add salt to taste.

  5. 5

    Once the onion is sauted, add the shredded cabbage and saute.

  6. 6

    After 2 minutes add the crushed coconut mixture and and combine everything.

  7. 7

    Cover the pan on low flame for about 6 minutes. The cabbage will be cooked by this time

  8. 8

    Open the lid and saute for another 3 minutes so that the cabbage thoran will be dry.

  9. 9

    Serve with hot rice.
