My husband says these taste very similar to the traditional ones he grew up with, but using vegetable shortening instead of butter would be best.

Ingredients

  1. 1 1/4 cupdark brown sugar
  2. 1/4 cupsoftened butter (shortening is more traditional)
  3. 1 1/2 tspbaking soda
  4. 1 tspsalt
  5. 2 tspcinnamon
  6. 1 1/2 tspvanilla
  7. 1 cupblack strap molasses
  8. 1egg
  9. 2/3 cupalmond milk
  10. 6 cupsAP flour
  11. 1egg for egg wash

Cooking Instructions

15-17 mins

    Preheat oven to 350°

    Cream together sugar, butter, soda, salt, cinnamon, vanilla

  3. 3

    Add molasses, egg and milk. Mix.

    Gradually add flour and mix thoroughly

  5. 5

    Flour table, cutter and rolling pin

  6. 6

    Roll out dough to about 1/4 inch thick and cut as many cookies as you can.

    Place cookies on parchment lined baking sheet

    Roll out and cut cookies until all dough is used

  9. 9

    In small bowl, whisk egg. Using small brush, paint top of each cookie

  10. 10

    Bake 15-17 mins, let set up on pan for several minutes before transferring onto a wire rack to cool completely

  11. 11

    Once completely cool, store in air tight container.

Started cooking/baking with Gram just as soon as I was old enough to stand in a chair, with her apron tied around my chest. Made my first solo Thanksgiving meal at age 8. Putting a new flair on classic nothern New England style cooking.
