Ingredients

  1. 2 tbspbengal gram dal (chana dal)
  2. 2 tbspgreen gram dal (moong dal)
  3. 2 tbsppink lentils (masoor dal)
  4. 2 tbsppigeon peas spilt and skinned (tuvar dal)
  5. 2 tbspblack gram (urad dal)
  6. 2green cardamoms
  7. 2cloves
  8. 1green chilli, chopped
  9. 2kashmiri red chilies, broken
  10. 1/2 inchginger, crushed
  11. 1/4 cuponion, chopped
  12. 1tomato, chopped
  13. 1/2 tspcumin seeds
  14. 1/4 tspturmeric powder
  15. 1/2 tspgaram masala
  16. 1/4 tspasafoetida powder
  17. 1 tspghee
  18. 1 tspsalt
  19. 2 tbspcoriander chopped

Steps

  1. 1

    Rinse and soak the dals in water for 30 mins.

  2. 2

    Drain the water and add 2 cups of fresh water, pressure cooks the dals for 4 to 5 whistles or till they are completely cooked.

  3. 3

    Mash the dal and keep aside.
    Heat ghee in a pan and add cumin seeds, cloves, cardamoms, and red chilies.

  4. 4

    Once they splutter add the ginger, asafoetida and green chilli and fry them till the raw aroma of ginger goes away.
    Add onions and saute till they get soft and translucent.
    Add the tomatoes, turmeric, salt and garam masala and fry the masala till the tomatoes become soft and mushy.

    Add the dal and mix well.
    Simmer the dal for 10 mins so the flavors of the spices infuse well with the lentils.
    Garnish the dal with coriander leaves and serve hot.
