Prepare all the ingredients.

Rinse the clams thoroughly and purge them of sand. Smash and mince the garlic. Rinse the basil and set aside.

Heat a pan and add vegetable oil. Sauté the minced garlic until fragrant, then add the clams. Pour in the rice wine and stir-fry until the clams open.

Pour the soy sauce around the edge of the pan and add the sugar for flavor.

Add the basil and quickly stir-fry until evenly mixed, then turn off the heat. Add chili pepper to taste when you add the basil, if desired.

Tips:
* You can substitute clams with littleneck clams; the cooking method is the same.
* Always purge fresh clams or littleneck clams of sand before cooking.
* To purge clams: Dissolve salt in water at twice the saltiness you would use for cooking. Submerge the clams in the salt water and let them purge sand for about 2 hours.
* You can mix the sauce ingredients in a small bowl ahead of time.
