Peel the potatoes and slice them thinly. Do not wash them, so the starch stays. Finely chop the garlic.

Heat the milk with the garlic, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. When it starts to boil, add the potato slices and cook, stirring gently and regularly, for 15 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Butter a baking dish.

Place the drained potatoes in the dish, cover with cream, and dot with pieces of butter.

Bake for about 1 hour.
