Simple red cabbage
My lazy adaptation of red cabbage with apple.
Cooking Instructions

Cut the cabbage into tin slices. Use a mandoline or do it by hand. Remove the stem and the outer leaves

Cut the onion in to thin quater moons
- 3
Put the oil in a cast Iron pot. Put in the onion and let cook for 5 min. Do not let it Brown.

Put in the bay leaf, stockcubes, karwijseeds
- 5
Put in the cabbage,water vinegar and syrup.
- 6
Put in the apple sauce. And let cook for another 80min or until the cabbage is soft enough.

Pick out the bay leaves. And season with salt and pepper. Serve

It freezes well. But do not put it in a plastic container it will stain it. Use glas one or freezer bags

A nice salad similar to German Potato salad. This salad is about different textures and intense flavor. If adding apples mix in a couple of different ones. Like a Granny Smith apple and one that is sweet. Raisins black and golden. Carrots of the rainbow variety. So many different ways this salad has been eaten over the years. Nuts added including shredded coconut, changes the tempo of the ways it's eaten. I have even put chopped bratwurst or smoked sausage in it instead of bacon. I have always associated, red cabbage with sweet and sour flavors. Even served it with potatoes in it.If you like a sharper tartness about it add apple cider vinegar, or distilled vinegar. The cane vinegar is about as sharp as my youngest granddaughters prefer. Usually I use apple cider vinegar. This one I made for them.
