Béchamel sauce

Also known as 'white sauce' this is used as a base for kid-friendly recipes
such as macaroni and cheese or alfredo pasta. The sauce is made with some flour,
milk and butter - how easy is that. The next time you add Béchamel sauce to your supermarket list, scratch that off and instead buy the ingredients to make this delicious sauce at home. It won't have any extra bits and preservatives.
It's incredibly easy to make but it's definitely important to make sure you whisk well to get a smooth and thick sauce. So if you don't own a whisk, grab one the next time you see one! I make this when I am in a rush but need to make a decent dinner. I cook some pasta and either saute veggies such as mushrooms, spinach, asparagus, peas or some meat like chicken or use both meat n veg and then mix it all together with some béchamel sauce, black pepper and grated parmesan cheese. Quick, easy and delicious AND kid-friendly dinner done!

Steps

20 mins
  1. 1

Begin by melting the butter in a non-stick sauce pan. I have mentioned the onions as optional cause depending on the situation (i.e if it's going to be only for my little miss, the onion is skipped). But if you do add the onions, add it now. Make sure its finely chopped.

  2. 2

Once the onions have softened, add the flour and salt. Have the heat on medium low and stir constantly until the flour mixture goes pale and has a slightly nutty aroma. This takes around 5mins.

  3. 3

Next add the milk and whisk continuously till its smooth.

  4. 4

Reduce the heat to low and whisk occasionally until the sauce starts to thicken. Once its done (7-10mins later), set aside until it's ready to use

  5. 5

    None

Welcome to my Blog The Eaterspot. My blogging journey began in March 2010. I had just relocated from the US, and living in Wellington, New Zealand was definitely a whole lot different from the US. The day after I landed here, I began a full time job, but I still had a whole lot of free time after 5pm. I was cooking a lot of new dishes from various cuisines so the blog was born to document my cooking for my friends and family to follow what we are upto as a newly married couple and to see what we were eating! Thanks for visting my spot!
