In a large skillet heat the oil and butter over medium-low heat until the butter is melted

Add the onions, garlic, ham and bacon

Cook covered stirring ocasionally until the onions are soft about 25 minutes

Increase heat to moderate high and cook mixture uncovered stirring constantly until most of the liquid has evaporated and onions begin to brown about 10 minutes

Add wine or apple juice and stir scraping up the brown bits at the bottom of the pan

Add the broth and the bay leaf and simmer stirring until mixture is reduced slightly about 8 minutes

Add cream salt and pepper to taste and cook stirring until thickened

Remove skillet from heat and discard bay leaf

Stir in cheese and keep sauce warm and covered

In a pot of salted boiling water cook spaghetti until al dente

Drain spaghetti well and in a large bowl toss with sauce
