Rinse the lentils and cover with water. Cook over medium heat for 15 minutes.

Rinse the rice thoroughly to remove the starch (to prevent sticking or becoming mushy), then soak in water for 30 minutes.

Add all the spices, the rice, and 1 1/2 cups water (about 360 ml) or more as needed. Once it comes to a boil, reduce the heat to very low and cook for 15 minutes until done.

Fry the onions until golden brown. Serve the rice mixture on plates, top with the fried onions, and drizzle with the onion frying oil. Enjoy!
