Maharashtrian chavali chi usal (black eyed peas curry)

Ingredients

3-4 servings
  1. 2 cupsblack eyed peas
  2. 2tomatoes
  3. 2onions
  4. 2-3 clovesgarlic
  5. 1 tbspgaram masala powder
  6. 1 tspRed chilli powder
  7. 1/2 tbspturmeric powder
  8. 2 tbspCoriander seeds
  9. 1 tbspfennel seeds
  10. 1 inchGinger
  11. 4 tbspfresh coconut
  12. Pinchasafoetida
  13. 1/2 tspcumin seeds
  14. as requiredGhee as required

Cooking Instructions

    To begin making the Maharashtrian Chavali Chi Usal soak the black-eyed peas in water for 2 hours and keep it ready. Heat a flat skillet with oil, add coriander seeds and fennel seeds. Saute for 1 minute.

    Heat a pan and add finely chopped onions and fry till the onions become light brown. Add ginger, garlic and coconut and saute for 2 more minutes. Now add grated tomatoes and add garam masala powder, turmeric powder, and red chilli powder and saute them well till the curry is cooked and starts seperating ghee.

    Finally add boiled black eyed peas in the curry. Check for salt add 2 cups of water. Once done boil the water and cook it till required consistent is achieved. Add chopped coriander leaves as garnish. Serve the Maharashtrian Chavali Chi Usal Recipe can be had with rice or chapati.
