This is actually the same thing as Onion ‘Kakiage’ Tempura. ‘Kakiage’ is a type of Tempura made with a variety of thinly sliced or chopped Vegetables and Seafood. The most popular ingredient is probably Onion. I pan-fried the mixture instead of deep-frying it. This humble Onion Pancake is very tasty.

Ingredients

2 Servings
  1. 1large Onion *thinly sliced
  2. 1 tablespoonOil
  3. Batter
  4. 1/4 cupPlain Flour
  5. 1/4 cupPotato Starch
  6. 1/4-1/2 teaspoonSalt
  7. 1Egg
  8. 2 tablespoonsWater *plus extra if required
  9. *Note: You can use Water only if you don’t want to use Egg
  10. Dipping Sauce
  11. 2 tablespoons‘Ponzu’ to serve *OR 1 tablespoon Soy Sauce & 1 tablespon Rice Vinegar
  12. Crispy Chilli Oil OR Rāyu (Chilli Oil) to serve

Cooking Instructions

    Mix the Batter ingredients in a mixing bowl. Alter the amount of Water to make THICK Batter.

    Add thinly sliced Onion to the batter and mix well to combine.

  3. 3

    Heat Oil in a frying pan over medium low heat, form a large pancake OR 2 to 4 smaller pancakes, and cook until both sides are nicely browned and crispy.

    Cut into smaller pieces if large, and serve with ‘Ponzu’. I recommend to add some Crispy Chilli Oil OR Rāyu (Chilli Oil) to the sauce.
