Ingredients

2 servings
  • 3/4 cuptoor dal, soaked 20 minutes
  • 2tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 tsptamarind soaked
  • 1/4onion, chopped
  • 1/4 tspturmeric
  • 1 tspkashmiri red chilli powder
  • 1chilli, slit
  • 3 tspoil
  • 3 cupwater
  • 4 clovesgarlic, crushed
  • 1 tspmustard
  • 1 tspurad dal
  • 1 tspcumin / jeera
  • pinchhing / asafoetida
  • 2dried red chilli, broken
  • 1 tbspcurry leaves
  • 1 tspsalt
  • 2 tbspcoriander, chopped

Steps

  1. 1

    Firstly, in a pressure cooker take ¾ cup toor dal. make sure to soak dal for 20 minutes.

  2. 2

    Add 2 tomato, small piece tamarind, ¼ onion, ¼ tsp turmeric, 1 tsp chilli powder.

  3. 3

    Further add 1 chilli, 1 tsp oil and 3 cups water, pressure cook for 5 whistles on medium flame or until dal is cooked completely.

  4. 4

    Once the pressure releases, mash the dal smooth with the help of a whisk. Keep aside.

  5. 5

    In a large kadai heat 2 tbsp oil and saute 4 clove garlic until they change colour slightly.

  6. 6

    Also add 1 tsp mustard, 1 tsp urad dal, 1 tsp cumin, pinch hing, 2 dried red chilli and few curry leaves.

  7. 7

    Splutter the tempering on low to the medium flame without burning.

  8. 8

    Add in cooked tomato dal and 1 tsp salt.Mix well and simmer for 2 minutes or until the flavours are well absorbed.

  9. 9

    Finally, add 2 tbsp coriander and serve tomato pappu with hot steamed rice topped with ghee.
