Classic Chinese sauce for roast pork.

Grind the five-spice mix ingredients in a spice grinder to make a powder. Store any extra in an airtight jar.

In a small bowl, combine the char siu sauce ingredients. For marinating meat, do not thicken the sauce.

To use as a sauce, thicken it. Mix 2 teaspoons cornstarch with 1 tablespoon water until dissolved. Add to the sauce, whisk well, and cook over low heat for about 2 minutes after it comes to a boil. Let cool, then refrigerate for future use.
