I love old style cooking and natural products. Proper old school Red Velvet cake is coloured using beetroot and that's what I use in mine rather that dye. This of course is basically chocolate porridge but calling it Red Velvet makes it sound more exotic to my kids and they eat it faster!

Ingredients

5 mins
4 servings
  1. 160 gramsgluten-free rolled oats
  2. 4 tspcocoa powder
  3. 4 tspdried beetroot powder (or red food dye as required)
  4. 720 mlcoconut milk / whole milk
  5. to tastesugar or sweetener

Cooking Instructions

5 mins
  1. 1

Add all ingredients to a saucepan

  2. 2

Let simmer for 10 minutes or until well thickened

  3. 3

Sweeten to taste and serve with a swirl of coconut milk or cream on top

  4. 4

For one serving I add 2 tsp of beetroot powder but if you follow that rule per serving you'll have very pink porridge! Too much does impart on taste too but it's by no means unpleasant. It's quite sweet actually so you may not need as much sugar as you'd think. Of course you can skip the beetroot powder and use food dye instead or just leave it out altogether
