Preheat oven to 450°F

Dissolve yeast in lukewarm water. Set aside 5 to 10 minutes.

Combine flour, sugar, baking soda and work in shortening using a pastry blender until mixture resembles "small peas" in size and shape.

Stir in yeast to room temperature buttermilk. Add this mixture to flour mixture.

Roll out on heavily floured board. Cut as desired with biscuit cutter.

Let rise one hour and bake until golden brown.

***unused dough keeps a week in refrigerator.
