Ingredients

  • For Kanji:
  • 1 cupKerala matta rice
  • 4-5 cupWater
  • 1/2 tspSalt
  • 1 tspGhee
  • For Payar thoran:
  • 1/2 cupGreen gram/ mung been
  • 3Green chilli
  • 1 strandCurryleaves
  • 1 tspCoconut oil
  • 1 tspMustard seeds
  • 1/2 tspUrad dal
  • 5-6Small onion
  • 1/8 cupGrated coconut
  • 1/4 tspTurmeric powder
  • 1 tspSalt

Steps

    Preparing kanji: Wash the rice and pressure cook it for 12 to 13 whistles in pressure cooker.

  2. 2

    Preparing payar thoran: Pressure cook the mung been for 6 whistles.

  3. 3

    Heat coconut oil in a pan/cheenachatti. Add mustard seeds, urad dal.

  4. 4

    When mustard seeds splutter, add curry leaves, green chilli and small onion. Fry till onion is transparent.

  5. 5

    Add Cooked green gram, turmeric powder and salt. Mix well.

  6. 6

    Add grated coconut and cook for 2-3 mins. Switch off the flame.

  7. 7

    Serving Kanji: In a bowl/plate take kanji. Add some ghee and salt into the kanji. Enjoy this kanji with papad/pappadam, green gram/payar thoran and thengachammathi/coconut chutney.
