Ingredients

  1. 8 piecesMedium sized fresh water prawns -
  2. Green cardamom / Choti elaichi - 2, broken
  3. Cinnamon / Dalchini - 1 small piece
  4. Whole dry red chillies - 2, broken
  5. 3 tbspOnion paste -
  6. 1 tbspGarlic paste -
  7. 1 tbspGinger paste -
  8. 4 tbspGrated tomato -
  9. Potato - 1 medium, cut lengthwise
  10. 1 tspHaldi / Turmeric powder -
  11. 1 tspRed chilli powder -
  12. 1 tspCoriander / Dhania powder -
  13. 1/2 tspGaram masala powder -
  14. Cooking oil - I use Mustard oil
  15. 1 tspSugar -
  16. to tasteSalt -

Steps

  1. 1

    Marinate the cleaned prawns with salt and turmeric powder.

  2. 2

    Heat 2 tbsp of mustard oil and lightly fry them. Do not overcook... just remove them as soon as they change colour and curl up.

    Add 1 tbsp more of the oil and to it add the elaichi, dalchini, whole red chillies.

  4. 4

    Add the onion paste and fry a little.

  5. 5

    Now add the garlic paste + the ginger paste + sugar + haldi powder + red chilli powder.

  6. 6

    Fry well till dryish and oil starts to leave the sides.

  7. 7

    Add the tomato and the dhania powder. Fry well.

  8. 8

    Now raise heat and add 2 cups (or as desired) of water. Add salt. Cover and bring to a boil.

  9. 9

    Remove cover and add the potatoes. (You can fry the potatoes earlier and add them now too, I do not.)

  10. 10

    Cover and cook on medium heat till the potatoes are well cooked.

  11. 11

    Remove cover, add the prawns and check for salt.

  12. 12

    Cover and cook for 10 more minutes or till the gravy reaches desired consistency.

  13. 13

    Remove cover and add the garam masala powder, cover and simmer for 5 more minutes.

  14. 14

    Serve hot.
